What's a Lumen?
We are all used to buying light bulbs by watts. For more light or a brighter bulb, we would choose higher watt bulb. This was the norm for over 100 years. Today, with LED technology it is no longer relevant. Instead of buying bulbs by watts we should be buying them by Lumens.
Lumens means the measurement of light output. Just like feet or inches is the measurement of distance Where Watt is the measurement of power consumed. Today, more efficient LED bulbs use less watt and produce more lumens. Below is a small reference chart comparing Watt and Lumen.
The average 40 Watt old incandescent bulbs produced around 450 Lumens
- 60 Watt incandescent = 800 Lumens
- 75 Watt incandescent = 1,100 Lumens
- 100 Watt incandescent = 1,300 Lumens
- 150 Watt incandescent = 2,600 Lumens
